I've been thinking about the significance of our first pokémon. I find it hard to believe the species given to us are random.

[A brief pause. He's been bothered by this ever since his arrival, actually.]

The initial reaction on meeting your first is important, whether it was fear, familiarity, anger, amusement, or the more unlikely indifference. Then there is of course the more pressing question: why were we given these particular ones?

I'd appreciate your thoughts.

[He's investigating again. Action for anyone in Azalea - he'll most likely be hanging around the pokémon center, working there and all.]

If it's a coincidence, it's an amazing one.

A friend of mine was an athlete who played an aquatic sport, and he received a Water-type. Another received a Pokémon that serves the same function as his pet back in his world. That would make at least three coincidences.

[Rosie brings him a cup of coffee, before pointing at Cooper. Would you like one too?]

Enough to stop labelling them as such. Ah- yes, please.

_{[Cooper can never say no to coffee. He smiles at Rosie, locates the paper he was looking for and then looks back at Cecil.]}

What would you make of it?

[Rosie nods and goes to get a cup, while Cecil pauses and thinks about it.]

They often give us partners we have affinities for, either because they have something in common with us or because they remind us of someone. Therefore, they might be trying to ease our arrival, and to encourage us to bond with our Pokémon. However, this does not explain how they know what to give us.

It could go both ways. I believe to have been set up with my partner as a way of unsettling me.

But that is an important question - how they would know, and how they decide who to ease and who to frighten.

To unsettle you? Does it match a phobia or a person you dislike?

[And here is Rosie, with a lovely, steaming cup of coffee. She also brought little packets of milk and sugar.]

To know that, we would first have to find out where they obtain the starters in the first place. I've never seen a single wild Cleffa, nor has anyone mentioned them. But they must be found somewhere.

It was a warning. I was told very specifically that the owls are not what they seem.

_{[Cooper looks genuinely happy to accept that cup of coffee, and takes a sip of it as it is - black and wonderful. He sighs in content and thanks Rosie before returning his attention to the other man.]}

They could quite simply be very rare, or live in very secluded areas. All the same, it is a question worthy of consideration.

The owls? A Hoothoot, then? Did you receive that warning at home or in Johto?

At least she was in the handbook. The Feebas I received for Christmas is not. Neither are my Banette or my Riolu.

Yes, a Hoothoot. I was given the warning about a week and a half prior to my arrival.

_{[He takes another well-needed sip of that coffee and leans back a little, making a humming sound.]}

My Electrike isn't either. Perhaps we should think of them as exotic species.

The timing is somewhat alarming, I admit.

Perhaps we should. But not knowing how they evolve and when they learn their attacks makes it harder to train them.

It could also make it all the more rewarding.

I know, but... What if one of them is like an Eevee, with multiple evolutions? I would not want to accidentally push them toward a form they would not feel comfortable with.

Pokémon are very intelligent creatures, Cecil. I'm confident they would let you know if they were uncomfortable somehow, as long as you make it clear that they are allowed to express it.

All of them are more than happy to express their feelings, but... How would they know an evolution does not suit them before it happens?

I don't think anyone can. We're all going through evolutions in life. We can only adapt to the changes in ourselves and our surroundings to the best of our ability.

...It would be nice if there was a little less change, sometimes.

No sudden disappearances, no world-breaking events, no perverted Ditto that fathers eggs off my Pokémon...

Things were better for you back home?

Not at all, but I had a group of twenty with me and we had an inkling of what we could do. I have lesser problems here, but I have no access to my usual ressources or powers, and thus my ability to act is limited.

_{[Cooper can relate. The purpose he had back home is, well ... Johto makes him unable to act on it.]}

I know what you mean. I had no powers to speak of but I still feel more exposed here, despite the typically friendly nature of this world.

This world has already proven that it is not as it seems, after what happened in October.

The dream I had back then... seems rather more gentle then what had happened a month earlier.

I believe they're memories, not dreams.

I didn't fare too bad on either of these occasions, fortunately.
