I've been thinking about the significance of our first pokémon. I find it hard to believe the species given to us are random.

[A brief pause. He's been bothered by this ever since his arrival, actually.]

The initial reaction on meeting your first is important, whether it was fear, familiarity, anger, amusement, or the more unlikely indifference. Then there is of course the more pressing question: why were we given these particular ones?

I'd appreciate your thoughts.

[He's investigating again. Action for anyone in Azalea - he'll most likely be hanging around the pokémon center, working there and all.]

I was thinking that would be the connection for you two. Do you like the fact that she's a pony?

Uh... Well...
[She glances over at Blaze, looking perplexed.]

... I dunno. It actually really bugged me at first... Since, ya know... She looks just like a pony, but she can't talk! [Beat.] Not sure I like that about her, but... I do like her for her, ya know? [Dash and Blaze were, oddly enough, BROS.]

_{[Coop nods, having pretty much expected that answer.]}

_{[He's got a ton of information to ponder now, so you might notice that he is actively doing so. Ah, the distraction.]}

[She grins and nods.]
Why're you askin' anyway? Just curious or what?

You could say that. Since it looks like I was mostly right and our starters appear to have some significance, the next thing to question is maybe not why we're given these particular ones, but to which purpose.

[She blinks, contemplating this.]
... Huh. I sorta just thought it was random, but... Sounds like you're onto something.

What was your starter, Dale?

A Hoothoot.

Oh, those owl things! [Dash remembered those! ... Noisy little buggers at night. :|] Heh!

Uh... Any idea why you got a Hoothoot?

Prior to coming here, I'd been warned very specifically that the owls are not what they seem. I don't know why Johto would set me up with an owl as a result, but it worried me at the time.

Owls... not what they seem...? [That just... gives her the heeby-jeebies...]

Heh, yeah, I always kinda thought owls were... just a little creepy. I mean, they live in the Everfree Forest! [She waves her hands around emphatically.] ... Even though that Digger guy says he used to be an owl, and... he's pretty cool.

What are the owls like where you're from? I mean... Why would somepony warn you about 'em and everything?

_{[Yeah, imagine what Coop felt when he heard that warning. ...or well, he was sort of only halfway conscious at the time, but he was freaked out when it was repeated to him later. :|b]}

What's the Everfree Forest?

_{[He needs to know about the owls. Watch him think about a response.]}

I don't know. I thought they were simply nocturnal birds of prey living in the woods, but that is evidently not the case.

Ya know-- that totally creepy forest we had to go through when we were lookin' for the Elements of Harmony! It's all dark and spooky, the weather changes by itself, clouds move on their own, and the animals take care of themselves. [And no matter how many times she tells this to people, she always manages to make it sound dramatic.] Songbirds always hung out around Ponyville, but ravens and owls hung out in the Everfree Forest. So most of 'em take care of themselves.
... Which is creepy.

[Pause.] Ya think they're, like... actually evil or something?

_{[Ah yes, he remembers. ...and he can't help but smile a bit at how this forest is so creepy.]}

I don't think I told you, but I believe your world sounds like a really nice place.

_{[And, contemplating the question brings on a more serious face.]}

... no. If they are, it's not their own doing. I don't know what to think past that.

[She beams.]
Yup! Heh, it is! [Beat.] This Johto place sure is different...

[She considers this.]
Hm... Sure, somepony may've told ya that owls aren't what they seem, but... what about your owl-- your starter? Whadya think about him-- or her?

Him. Holmes.

I couldn't find peace with him at first, but he's proven himself a good companion and partner.

I'm aware the warning probably holds no ground here, but I still find it interesting that I was given an owl.
