I've been thinking about the significance of our first pokémon. I find it hard to believe the species given to us are random.
[A brief pause. He's been bothered by this ever since his arrival, actually.]
The initial reaction on meeting your first is important, whether it was fear, familiarity, anger, amusement, or the more unlikely indifference. Then there is of course the more pressing question: why were we given these particular ones?
I'd appreciate your thoughts.
[He's investigating again. Action for anyone in Azalea - he'll most likely be hanging around the pokémon center, working there and all.]

It does sound like it. Given the number of replies I've gotten with people explaining how their initial partners do appear linked to them in some way, it wouldn't surprise me.
[And never mind the fact that he was named after a murderous AI.]
Given all the other things that go on here, giving us relevant starters wouldn't be too surprising.
[And he named his starter Holmes. What better name for an owl?]
Not at all. What worries me is the level of knowledge that would be necessary for us to get starters this relevant, and who or what is gathering that knowledge.
...the idea that this place might know more about us that we'd think doesn't seem too farfetched, really.
[He takes a second here.] No, it doesn't. I find it troubling.
[video] someday I'll stop forgetting tags
[video] haha, I don't mind
[He was never much for technology. Also, he's from 89. Accessing databases through a different computer? woah.]
I don't think you'd find any information if you could. I could be wrong, but I don't think this world is responsible for bringing us here.
[video] ;A; <3
[Beat.]
...good point, but you never know. There have to be answers somewhere, especially if someone here has the kind of information on us that would lead to relevant starters.
[video] xD <333
[Just a second while he grins at this before turning serious again.]
We should definitely explore every possibility to understand why we're here. In all honesty, trying a computer didn't occur to me.

[Sigh.]
It was kind of a first, though. I've never found a system I couldn't break through--if there is anything, their security makes the FBI's look like a wall made out of digital toothpicks.
[And he would know--he hacked their database fresh out of college.]
You sound like you know what you're talking about. You breached the Bureau database?
H-huh? Oh, no--I used to work there, after I graduated college. I helped with the central database's security and all that.
[Which wasn't ENTIRELY a lie, but... Way to slip up and mention some of your less-than-legal activities, bro.]
Mhm. What's your name?
Doctor Hal Emmerich--everyone here just calls me Hal or Otacon.
[He'd shake his hand, but video and all.]
A doctor, huh. What kind?
Mechanical engineering. Robotics, that kind of thing.
Sounds like interesting work. Did that have anything to do with breaking into the FBI database?
[Screw it. Not like he was going to get arrested for it here.]
I had kind of just gotten out of college then--y-you know, stupid kids do really st-stupid things and maybe I was looking for evidence of aliens but I d-didn't do anything aside from hack in and look around, r-really!
[Flail a little more, Otacon, you still look remotely sane. :|]
[video] ... I might develop a crush on his awkward
Aliens? Hal, are you familiar with the Bluebook project?
[video] everyone loves Otadork.
Bluebook...? Can't say I am, no.
[video] everyone dislikes cell phone internet for youtube incompatibility!
Alright.
[Evenly regards the other man for a second.]
If you weren't trying to get to Bureau information with bad intent, I can't say I blame you for the act. Curiosity is the corner stone of our development, but I still feel obligated to advice you to not repeat it.
[And that over and done with:]
Now, what was that about aliens?
[video] DDD: oh noes
[video] I also blame said cell phone for my slowness xD
[video] s'all good, bro. <3
