I've been thinking about the significance of our first pokémon. I find it hard to believe the species given to us are random.

[A brief pause. He's been bothered by this ever since his arrival, actually.]

The initial reaction on meeting your first is important, whether it was fear, familiarity, anger, amusement, or the more unlikely indifference. Then there is of course the more pressing question: why were we given these particular ones?

I'd appreciate your thoughts.

[He's investigating again. Action for anyone in Azalea - he'll most likely be hanging around the pokémon center, working there and all.]

No. Murder is never an acceptable act - especially not in revenge.

_{[There's a hard tone to his words, because he wants to make sure they get through.]}

I know. [Subaru seems extremely focused in a way that he isn't normally, on this subject-- although there's also the distinct impression that there's a lot about the situation he isn't saying.] I need to do it all the same.

For any other reason than avenging your sister?

_{[There's a distinct note of 'you better tell me'. Coop doesn't take lightly on the topic at all.]}

[there's a long pause on Subaru's end where he looks down for a long moment, considering what to say. It's a long and extremely personal story...]

...He's not a good person.

That's not an adequate reason.

_{[Coop will be practically ruthless in this matter. But he's completely non-threatening, all the same - just pressing for the real answer.]}

[how to say all this... there's another lengthy pause.]

He's an assassin. He didn't start or stop with her. [and then his tone changes and isn't nearly as dead, it's something that's hurt and angry and sad all at the same time.] He killed her instead of me.

_{[It's not that Cooper's unaffected - just that he knows what it's like to be in the midst of a murder, and he still has no amibition to kill the person who caused the trauma for him. So no, Subaru - it's still not a good reason.]

[There's a pause as Cooper studies the other, eyes just a bit narrowed.]}

Why would someone want you assassinated?

[Subaru looks visibly distressed for a moment. Giving you the story in bits and pieces probably isn't helping either of them, but he doesn't want to go over it again. Hasn't, since she died and since someone witnessed it first hand inside his soul.]

It's... complicated. I'm... supposed to stop him from what he does. I-- I wasn't a job, he... was going to kill me of his own volition.

Do you have to stop him by murdering him, or is that your own motive?

_{[There's a bit of a guarded tone to his voice. See, the guy's FBI - if he held any kind of authority in this world, he'd have to arrest you. While he hasn't, it's ingrained in him, really ... a lot depends on that answer, but Coop's opinions regarding murder will hardly budge.]}

[when Subaru replies this time, his voice is quiet, and he sounds exhausted more than anything.]

There's no other way to stop him. I have to kill him, to stop him from killing anyone else. The longer it takes me, the more people he hurts.

_{[Coop would be aggressive about that statement, but he realizes that he doesn't know the workings of Subaru's world. He's quiet for just a moment, before asking yet another question-]}

Is there no law enforcement in your world?

...There is. They aren't equipped to deal with-- [he hesitates for a second, but there's really no reason to dance around the word.] --magic.

He would be able to kill all of them before they could touch him.

_{[He takes a moment here, nodding.]}

I think you better tell me the whole story.

[Subaru looks away for a moment, before nodding. The camera angle keeps shifting funny-- it looks like he might be fidgeting with his hands.]

...My family-- the Sumeragi family-- is an old family that has worked as... We work with spirits. We help spirits pass on, ensure no harm comes to the living. I was chosen to be the head of the family, due to my powers.

...there's another family-- the Sakurazuka family. They're a clan of assassins. They use the same magic we do, but they don't do good things with it. We've been enemies for generations.

He was going to kill me, because I was the head. He accepted Hokuto in my stead... But he's killed thousands more since then, and he'll keep doing it if someone doesn't stop him.

[there's a lot more still to the story-- a lot of parts he's left out-- but that's the basic premise.]

_{[He nods again, considering the new information. He looks a bit troubled, but in a somewhat distant way.]}

You're certain murdering him is the only way of stopping it.

Yes. [Subaru looks distinctly uncomfortable for a moment, and then just looks... sad, more than anything. A little bit desperate.] I want it to end.

_{[At that, Cooper looks completely sympathethic, dropping his eyes from the gear for a moment before looking at the other once more.]}

I don't want you to take someone's life.

I don't-- [want to, he almost says, but he can't say that. He can't run the risk of letting Seishirou find out.] I have to try.

There's no way to block his abilities?

_{[He's not sure what to make of this situation. He's strongly averse to any kind of murder, and he still believes Subaru has a choice here ... but he's not sure what would be the right one from the way the information is presented.]}

No. Even I... may not be able to defeat him, and I've been training for this since I was a small child.

[if he told you the whole story, it'd really just make things that much worse. He's been avoiding it for good reasons. Mostly because you're perceptive enough that you might catch on to what he actually intends to do...]

_{[What's worse is that Cooper is perceptive enough to pick up on the fact that there's something significant left unsaid. For the moment, though, he'll just settle with giving Subaru a look that reads like a strange mix of kind and harsh.]}

He's here, isn't he?

[Subaru nods, looking distinctly miserable.]

I can't do anything about it here... not without any of my powers. And I-- I couldn't ask my Pokemon to try to... attack someone. Not like that. [yes, he's more worried about his Pokemon than he is about himself. He makes a terrible murderer.]

_{[No kidding. Cooper shakes his head in response.]}

No, you couldn't. _{[Frankly, he doesn't really think Subaru to be capable of murder, either - but he knows better than to judge killers. They can be anyone, anywhere.]} I suppose the good news are that while he's here, he's got no powers either.

...I'm not certain that will stop him, if he's here long enough. [Subaru looks severely disenchanted by this thought. Hngh, what if Seishirou kills someone else he likes here?]

Do-- do you know what happens if someone is killed here?

No. Maybe they're not. Some people were dead before coming here, but are now very much alive.
