tapestodiane: (what are you saying)

I've been thinking about the significance of our first pokémon. I find it hard to believe the species given to us are random.

[A brief pause. He's been bothered by this ever since his arrival, actually.]

The initial reaction on meeting your first is important, whether it was fear, familiarity, anger, amusement, or the more unlikely indifference. Then there is of course the more pressing question: why were we given these particular ones?

I'd appreciate your thoughts.

[He's investigating again. Action for anyone in Azalea - he'll most likely be hanging around the pokémon center, working there and all.]

Well, when you put it that way, I'm not sure, aru. For example, in general, the species Gyarados is supposed to be very aggressive after it evolves from a Magikarp, but Lien-Hua is not like that at all, aru.

If we're being given certain pokemon with certain personalities, then perhaps there is someone, or some group, responsible for bringing us here. However, I don't know if they would use magic or a machine to accomplish such a task, aru.

Well, as a detective, I pride myself on my intelligence. I was given a psychic type--the, ah, most mental of the many types out there. He is also a flying type, and wings have always been an important symbolism for me.

A friend of mine was an athlete who played an aquatic sport, and he received a Water-type. Another received a Pokémon that serves the same function as his pet back in his world. That would make at least three coincidences.

[Rosie brings him a cup of coffee, before pointing at Cooper. Would you like one too?]

[A man and his Poliwhirl come onscreen.]

Hahaha, it's simple! They call me the toad sage and this one is a toad! ...Will be a toad.

....

...You're going to become a toad, right, Ken-chan?

"Whiiiiirl lili?"

[He doesn't actually know, what with two possible evolutions ahead of him.]

Yes, very.

There's no way our arrival here was by coincidence, aru. I can't really think of anything else that could have brought us here. Unless, this was the will of the gods, but I highly doubt that.

[Speaking of her starter, Watson the Xatu peers over her shoulder at Cooper]

My friends have also all gotten Pokémon that suit them in some way.

Hell if I have any clue. I mean, it seems like she's got some magical talent, I guess, if you want to consider it that, but...

[And there's the fact that she's got some of Ferris' qualities, but you asked for species.]

[...poor man. You asked for it!]

Well, little tadpole! Let the magnificent Jiraiya enlighten you!

[He strikes an outrageous pose, and the poses get even more outrageous with each sentence]

I am the chosen one of Mount Myouboku, home of the mighty toads!
I am the master of the toads' secret sage arts!
I am friend to all my toad brothers who hop and swim!
I am the honored fighter who's permitted to ride on the head of the great toad boss, Gamabunta himself!
I am Jiraiya of the legendary three; the famous writer and sage of toads!

[Rosie nods and goes to get a cup, while Cecil pauses and thinks about it.]

They often give us partners we have affinities for, either because they have something in common with us or because they remind us of someone. Therefore, they might be trying to ease our arrival, and to encourage us to bond with our Pokémon. However, this does not explain how they know what to give us.

Not really, aru. I have respect for the gods, but I'm not religious. I am, however, superstitious, aru. Why?

[Extremely superstitious, but not at all religious.]

I started with a Pichu. I don't really know why though.

To unsettle you? Does it match a phobia or a person you dislike?

[And here is Rosie, with a lovely, steaming cup of coffee. She also brought little packets of milk and sugar.]

To know that, we would first have to find out where they obtain the starters in the first place. I've never seen a single wild Cleffa, nor has anyone mentioned them. But they must be found somewhere.
