tapestodiane: (what are you saying)

I've been thinking about the significance of our first pokémon. I find it hard to believe the species given to us are random.

[A brief pause. He's been bothered by this ever since his arrival, actually.]

The initial reaction on meeting your first is important, whether it was fear, familiarity, anger, amusement, or the more unlikely indifference. Then there is of course the more pressing question: why were we given these particular ones?

I'd appreciate your thoughts.

[He's investigating again. Action for anyone in Azalea - he'll most likely be hanging around the pokémon center, working there and all.]

You know, I think you're probably right.

I thought mine was really nice...though looking back, I think this place was making a weird joke.

I got a Mareep, Asimov.

[The Ampharos waddles in from off camera and sits down next to his trainer with an audible whump.]

There was a science fiction novel called 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?'. And Mareep's...well, an electric sheep. I can't help but think maybe who and whatever decided to give me Asimov was referencing something.

I read a lot of science fiction as a kid--mostly about robots. It's why I named him Asimov, actually.

[And never mind the fact that he was named after a murderous AI.]

Given all the other things that go on here, giving us relevant starters wouldn't be too surprising.

I read a little of that in college, I think.

...the idea that this place might know more about us that we'd think doesn't seem too farfetched, really.

Just a little, yeah. Where do you think they get all their information?

Same here. Shame I can't get into any particular database through the computers here.

Sure it is. I can hack into more or less anything if I need to.

[Beat.]

...good point, but you never know. There have to be answers somewhere, especially if someone here has the kind of information on us that would lead to relevant starters.

I tried at the Pokemon Center here, but I couldn't get anything. it's like the storage system is all that's even there to access.

No, I wasn't too surprised either.

[Sigh.]

It was kind of a first, though. I've never found a system I couldn't break through--if there is anything, their security makes the FBI's look like a wall made out of digital toothpicks.

[And he would know--he hacked their database fresh out of college.]

[WHOOPS. 8|]

H-huh? Oh, no--I used to work there, after I graduated college. I helped with the central database's security and all that.

[Which wasn't ENTIRELY a lie, but... Way to slip up and mention some of your less-than-legal activities, bro.]

[He adjusted his glasses, a nervous habit as usual.]

Doctor Hal Emmerich--everyone here just calls me Hal or Otacon.

[...no wonder he was so interested in the FBI's database. Inwardly, Otacon facepalmed.]

Mechanical engineering. Robotics, that kind of thing.

Uh...n-no.

[Screw it. Not like he was going to get arrested for it here.]

I had kind of just gotten out of college then--y-you know, stupid kids do really st-stupid things and maybe I was looking for evidence of aliens but I d-didn't do anything aside from hack in and look around, r-really!

[Flail a little more, Otacon, you still look remotely sane. :|]
